[My Guest Post] Writing Prompt for Perspective

This month at Apex Book Company, I talk a little bit about something I feel is crucial to ensuring your story is your own — perspectives. When I’m worldbuilding and mapping out my plots, I also include something that happens a lot in romance — what the character believes and fears.

Just recently, I had the chance to apply this to a flash fiction piece-turned-short story called The Legend of Aeneis that I submitted into the atmosphere. The premise was about how a group of priests conducted a ritual they believed would save them from an impending attack. Thinking that uber-ancient technology or magic is the end all and be all is quite common in our culture, but it’s not always true. In this case, it definitely wasn’t.

Perspectives are one way to achieve the characterization. I just got done watching Season Five of Doctor Who, and I was reminded of how the Doctor’s view of humanity affects and shapes what he does and how he sees the world. Why “Hits” Don’t Matter. More on my Guest Post at Howtowriteshop.com

Web analytics is a lot of fun for me. I really enjoy digging in and helping people either set up the programs or digging in and finding answers to basic questions. Some systems are easier to understand than others; Omniture is by far the most complex I’ve ever worked on. Google Analytics, although it’s changed quite a bit over the years, has some great customizable features. For example, you can set up a query parameter for your in-site search to see what people are looking for when they come to your site. If you own a business, that’s a pretty powerful tool that will allow you to see what people want to buy or look for. Like all things, web analytics can be very frustrating, too. This is especially true if the web analytics package is not set up properly. With some packages, there’s a lot that can go wrong before your data hits the dashboard. Sometimes, there could be nothing wrong with your traffic, even though the data shows something very different.

To avoid unnecessary confusion, I often encourage people not to look at “hits” as a standalone metric. For more on the topic, I wrote about “hits” for the How To Write Shop.

I cannot tell you how many people I’ve talked to who focus solely on “hits” to their website. The challenge with looking at “hits,” is that a single hit can mean a lot of different things. Are they page views? If so, do they include non-human occurrences like search engine bots or spammers? If they’re visits, how are they being measured?

Guest Post: Why Mixing Content is a Bad Idea

For today’s post, I’d like to turn my blog over to Jonathan Bailey, a copyright and plagiarism consultant and CEO of CopyByte. Be sure to read is bio after the post below.

In the music or video world, remixing can often be a very good thing. People take short samples of music or short clips of videos and create entirely new works of incredible creativity.

However, creating a proper remix takes a great deal of talent and effort. It is more than simply a process of splicing together various elements, it involves the creation of a brand new work using pieces from others that usually offers commentary or adds to the original works.

Unfortunately though, some have tried to use a form of remixing as a shortcut to creating content for their site. This usually involves copying and pasting various passages of content from various sources and stringing them together to create a new work that is meant to replace the original, not expand upon it.

This practice, often called “splicing”, is a form of plagiarism that is not only unethical, but also is illegal and, frankly stupid.

If you are are considering engaging in this kind of behavior here are a few good reasons to avoid it.

Copyright Law and Splicing

Legally speaking, most well-done remixes are viewed as safe because they rely on fair use, which allows artists, reviewers and others to use small portions of content for the creation of new works and for the purpose of commentary and criticism.

The problem with fair use is that there are no hard and fast rules as to what is and is not a fair use. The law was written to be flexible and each case is handled on an individual basis. However, the four factors used by courts to determine fair use are as follow:

    1. the purpose and character of your use
    2. the nature of the copyrighted work
    3. the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and
    4. the effect of the use upon the potential market.

Factors one and four are the most important and it is easy to see why splicing is very likely to run afoul of the law. Since the intent of the use is to create a replacement for the work and not a wholly new one, that hurts splicing seriously on both the character of the use, which looks to see how transformative the use is, and the effect on the potential market.

So, for example, using snippets from various articles to create a new work, is likely to be considered an infringement. Copyright holders who have had their content used in this manner are free to file DMCA takedown notices and, in extreme cases, file a lawsuit against the person doing the splicing.

How Search Engines See It

Search engines crave original content and value it very highly. Sites that prominently feature original works are ranked highly in the search engines and those that have duplicate content are pushed either way down in the rankings or, even worse, in the the supplementary index where almost no visitors see it.

The problem with splicing is that it doesn’t create original content. Since all of the content is lifted verbatim or nearly verbatim from various sources that Google already indexes, the search engine can trivially detect this and works to reduce the ranking of these pages.

Though it is difficult to tell how much content one needs to include for Google to be able to detect it as duplicate, anything over a few sentences typically is discovered and is treated as duplicate content. As such, if you splice together a story using a few lines or paragraphs at a time, Google will most likely detect it and penalize you accordingly, making the effort worthless.

Quality of Work

However, even if Google and the other search engines are fooled by the splicing effort, your human visitors most likely will not. Different articles, even from the same source, have different styles, tones and structure. Stitching them together creates a mash that doesn’t flow and seems very awkward.

Real remixes and mashups take advantage of this, using the juxtaposition to create commentary. Spliced works, on the other hand merely come across as poorly-made creations that are inconsistent and awkward.

If one wants to take the time and energy to fix this problem, they need to dedicate so much to it that it would, in most cases, have simply been easier to create a new work from scratch. However, since creating a completely unique work avoids the copyright and duplicate content issues as well, it is by far the best approach to take when trying to craft high quality content for your site.

Bottom Line

Though there is a place for legitimate remixing, using splicing as a shortcut to create content for your site is not only probably illegal, but also stupid.

Not only does it produce content that is not widely-accepted by the search engines, it also produces poorer-quality work that won’t be well-loved by human visitors. Any attempt to edit content to avoid these issues will require more work than simply writing a new piece, making the entire purpose for splicing content moot.

In the end, if this is an approach to content generation you are considering, you would be wise to abandon it and either use content legitimately, for example under a Creative Commons License, or, even better, create your own work from scratch and only quote/cite material you need to bring into it.

Doing so not only keeps other bloggers and search engines happy, but is by far the best way to build and grow your site online.

What to Expect from Gaming and SciFi Conventions When You’re Speaking

Thanks to everyone who recommended RSS feeds for me; I’m going through the list and love the recommendations. This next post was inspired by a question from Facebook; it was such a great one I wanted to write about it so everyone could read it.

So you’ve come to a milestone in your writing career; either you’ve published a book or designed a few games and someone has noticed your product. Congratulations! You’ve been asked to be a part of their gaming, science fiction or similar convention. Never been to one before? Piece of cake!

Before you Go

The benefits to speaking at cons are pretty easy to see. You can develop relationships with new readers, fellow authors and promote a few of the other pros that have helped you along the way. Before you hop in your car, keep in mind that when you do go to a con (no matter how big or how small) you’re representing yourself as the “creative face” behind your product. That creative face becomes your persona, something that you can use as a promotional tool both on-and-offline.

Before you book your trip, you might want to ask a few questions:

  • How much of my expenses (convention pass, food, hotel, etc.) will be covered?
  • Will I have space in the dealer’s area to sell my books? Will I be charged for that?
  • Will I have the opportunity to perform an author reading for my book?
  • What type of speaking will I be expected to do? Panels, workshops, monologues, roundtables?
  • What is the expected attendance of the con? Hours?
  • Will there be any media coverage?
  • Do I have any other responsibilities as a guest or speaker?

Depending upon the size of the engagement, you may run into a situation where the environment is smaller and more focused, so you’ll have more one-on-one time with the people there. Generally speaking, the larger the con the more professional it gets. GenCon Indy, for example, has a Press Room but more often than not this seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

The most common type of speaking engagement at a con is a panel-based structure with a moderator. Featured speakers often provide a fully-developed, professional speech in a monologue format during key moments of the con.

As A Speakers or Guest

As a convention guest or speaker, you have a behind-the-scenes look at the fan culture. Many of the attendees that go to these cons are rabid readers and collectors, who follow authors religiously. In my experiences, there are often very knowledgeable attendees that are truly passionate about what they’re into. If you are not into gaming or science fiction or fantasy, be transparent with your potential readers. In my opinion, there is absolutely nothing a fan loves more than to tell you why they love Firefly or Babylon 5. To navigate around unfamiliar territory, many conventions will post their schedule online: I highly recommend either renting, playing, or learning a little bit about some of the events you might be interested in before you go. While you would not be obligated to be accessible 24-7 for the entire convention, appearing stand-offish because you’re uncomfortable in a room full of World of Darkness fans might end up giving people the wrong message.

Your first con might be a little overwhelming, but as you keep doing them you’ll find you can develop techniques to be professional, polite, and entertain your audience. Like most things, it takes work because there will be things you enjoy and things you don’t. A lot is riding on how well the convention planning holds when the day arrives. Take it from someone who has mentored others on running cons: it’s a lot of work. If something gets screwed up because your event was delayed or the room’s not perfect, be gracious. There is nothing worse than an unhappy guest in the middle of a busy con.

As an Attendee

So what does actually happen at a con? Well, if you’re going to something that involves gaming, there will be game demos–usually in blocks of time–that people may be pre-registering for. You might see a bunch of folk rolling dice or running down the hallways with feathery hats and leather vests; a lot of different kinds of games are played at gaming conventions. Sometimes sign-up for gaming is free, sometimes it’s not, so coordinate your schedule if you’d like to play.

You’ll probably see a variety of attendees dressed up in various costumes; dubbed “cosplay” there are some folk who enjoy donning a well-designed costume to support their favorite character. Age will vary from con to con, depending upon the games available and the events. Other events might include contests and awards, celebrity signings, a dealer’s room and/or art show, room parties, seminars, interviews, charity tournaments or auctions. Attendees often gauge what events they participate in based on their intent for attending the con; people are either finding work, having fun, reconnecting with old friends, networking, speaking, or are simply curious about what all the fuss is about.

Special note: Many of this year’s conventions will offer memoriams to one of the founding fathers of gaming, Gary Gygax. Be sure, if you are a speaker this year at a gaming con, to attend at least one of them.
