Cyber Monday! New Coffee Mug and eBooks Sale

Wanted to pop in briefly and mention a couple of sales going on today. Apex Book Company is running a forty percent off sale on their store. Use the discount code GIVE16 at checkout to save on some great books.

Over at DriveThruFiction.com, there’s a ton of sales going on, too. I’ve been checking out the reference materials for writers, and have seen the print edition in several bookstores. There’s no discount to be applied, you can visit the DriveThruFiction Sale to check out the books, or you can check out the DriveThruFiction Black Friday Sale which ends today. Some titles that I recommend would be Dynamic Characters, On Writing Horror, and the 101 Habits of Highly Successful Novelists.

Last but not least, something fun! After I cracked a joke about wanting this illustration on Facebook, my friend Charlie Bates illustrated a fairy smacking a troll upside the head with a rainbow and dubbed it the “Rainbow Smackdown”. This illustration is now available via Society 6; you can get a T-shirt or a coffee mug and support an amazing artist. Plus, this is on sale for Cyber Monday, too. Bonus!

Monster Edition

Over at Red Stylo Media, you can get the Monster Edition of UNFASHIONED CREATURES along with two other literary-based graphic novels POE TWISTED and SHAKESPEARE SHAKEN for $50. Here’s a link to the monster bundle. Enjoy!

My first comic Last Man Zombie Standing is included in both the monster edition and standard edition. You can get your hands on a digital copy now and see a preview through DriveThruComics.com and Red Stylo Media. The print editions of both will be available early 2014.

Truth In Less Freak-Outs

Hellboy Avatar

I’m finally getting back in the swing of “work,” and I’m falling in love with it again. Mind you, there’s a reason for this, and I feel that that was eloquently put here:

When I shifted from my day job at Weekly World News to fulltime freelance, I was advised that 80% of my time would be spent seeking work and the remainder actually doing the work. We’re out there selling ourselves constantly – partly it’s why we blog and chat and do conventions and book signings and so on. You need to throw something like five times as many projects out there as there is time to actually write one. Salesmen chase five times the number of leads to bring in the one real sale so it’s all the same. — SOURCE: No Need For a Writer To Be Discouraged by Bob Greenberger

I find that 80/20 rule to be true, even if you have residual income coming in. The trick is finding that residual income stream (e.g. royalties or what have you) and balancing that with your non-“work” time online. That’ll give you a little more flexibility when you’re seeking out new publishing opportunities.

Of course, work/life balance is always something to be managed. Freak-outs not required. But in spite of everything? The words, like spice, must still flow.
